Medication Recommendations for BOAS Surgery

To support a smooth recovery after Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) surgery, we provide a tailored medication plan designed to promote gastrointestinal comfort and reduce the risk of post-operative complications.

Preoperative medication recommendation: Cisapride or Metoclopramide & Famotidine or Omeprazole oral for 1 week prior to surgery, continue for 2 weeks post-op. Use to reduce gastric acid and decrease reflux.

  • Cisapride and Famotidine (3–4 Weeks Post-Op)
Following surgery, pets will typically receive cisapride, a pro-motility medication that helps keep the gastrointestinal tract moving normally, along with famotidine, an acid-reducing medication that minimizes stomach irritation. These medications are continued for 3–4 weeks after surgery to help manage reflux and support overall digestive health during recovery.
  • Transition Phase
After this initial period, we will recommend discontinuing cisapride. They will then restart cisapride for an additional 1-week course, which helps ensure the GI tract maintains normal motility as they transition back to their regular routine.
  • Discontinuing Famotidine
At the end of the first 3–4 weeks, famotidine can be discontinued unless otherwise advised based on that pet’s individual needs.
